Wildflower Wednesday

Updated: Nov 3, 2023

This week’s Wildflower Wednesday flower is Goldenrod.

Goldenrod is a misunderstood and underappreciated plant and is one of my favorite fall flowers (yea, I’m a sucker for the underdog ) If I ever write that wildflower book, I will write a whole chapter on it.

But for today I’ll keep it short and sweet and hopefully change your mind about this fall bloomer that is a very important food source for late season pollinators.

The main take away from this week’s post is that GOLDENROD is NOT the ALLERGY enemy that so many think it is!

Goldenrod gets a lot of hate because people think it causes allergies but that is not the case. Goldenrods pollen is very wet, sticky, and dense and does not fly through the air causing suffering to the masses. Many believe that it gets this reputation because it blooms at the same time as Ragweed, which spreads its pollen through the air and causes mass suffering. (sorry ragweed, but it’s true) So next time you're out and about give Goldenrod a little love, it wont make you sneeze and you may be surprised what you see if you take a closer look.
